John Stewart's new Green Lantern series will give the DC Universe its own version of Star Wars' Jedi Order.

Speaking with CBR in an exclusive interview, Green Lantern writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson said the new John Stewart-led series will introduce the DC Universe's version of the Jedi Order. "There have been so many great Green Lantern stories in the past, and I don't know what any of them would have said," he said when asked about the essential qualities needed for a Green Lantern story. "But for this particular story I'm writing, I'm trying to find this really fun balance of epic sci-fi with epic fantasy that is inherent in the Green Lantern power set, their history, and their setting of being throughout the whole cosmos. To me, it's this great opportunity for the DC Universe to have [its] own Jedi Order.

"That's what I'm after with this. Not every Green Lantern story is like that. I mean, there have been some really great Green Lantern stories, including [comics] by the great Denny O'Neil, that were much more ground-level kind of stories. What I'm trying to capture here, especially to contrast it with the great work that Jeremy [Adams] is doing in the Hal Jordan book, I'm trying to capture this blend of sci-fi and epic fantasy that we can tell in the setting of the DC Universe."

Dawn of DC Gives Readers Two New Green Lantern Series

Johnson is working with artist Montos on John Stewart-led backup story in Adams and Xermánico's Hal Jordan Green Lantern series, which launches on May 9, 2023. The synopsis for Green Latern #1 reads, "Spinning out of the events of Dark Crisis, the Guardians of Oa at the heart of the Green Lantern Corps have quarantined Sector 2814, home of the planet Earth—and its champion along with it! A heartbreaking defeat has sent Hal reeling, returning home to rediscover his roots…and find the man responsible for ruining his life: Sinestro. From the visionary team of Jeremy Adams and Xermánico (who brought you the epic Flashpoint Beyond) comes a tale of redemption, loss, and finding out that maybe…just maybe…you can go home again. At least if you’re willing to hot-wire a power ring to do it. Also featuring part one of John Stewart: War Journal from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Montos!"

Following the backup storyline, which is titled "Rise of the Revenant Queen," John Stewart's new series launches in fall 2023. While further details about the series will be revealed by DC at a later date, Johnson teased, "Where Hal Jordan's character is summarized in the tone of Jeremy's story, I want the epic, stoic, powerful, brilliant kind of nature of John Stewart to be expressed in the tone of that series so that people who want the crazy fighter pilot who shoots from the hip have that book. And the people [who] want to see the man who's loyal to the ideas that are bigger than himself, that fights the epic battles against ageless evils, get that book. I want the book to feel super different from the other one, so all readers get the one they prefer."
