The Green Knight star Dev Patel has been offered superhero movie roles before but has yet to find one that fits him.

"I mean, look, I’m not opposed to it. Those movies are a real spectacle when done right," Patel told Total Film magazine. "I guess if I fit in these worlds... I don’t know. The alchemy hasn’t been right for me, personally yet. These journeys with people like David [Lowery, director of The Green Knight], and stuff like that, have really been the most nourishing."

In the years since he starred in the British version of Skins, Patel has worked on an eclectic collection of movies, ranging from Danny Boyle's gritty 2008 Best Picture Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire to Neill Blomkamp's offbeat 2015 sci-fi action/drama Chappie and, more recently, Armando Iannucci's whimsical 2019 Charles Dickenson adaptation The Personal History of David Copperfield. However, even with the plethora of comic book superhero films released over that time, Patel has yet to sign on for such a project.

"I don’t want to shit on those movies, because there are some incredible performers that manage to go off and win Oscars, and then go and do a big Marvel movie," he added. "And there are films like Black Panther that culturally changed the paradigm in massive ways. I liked the first Captain America. I thought that was amazing, the action in that. And so it’s just finding the right one. It’s being invited along, and also finding the right one. The ones that I have been offered, which I can’t talk about, haven’t quite worked for me."

2010's The Last Airbender, a critically reviled live-action adaptation of the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series, marks Patel's sole excursion into the world of big-budget franchise movies to date. That said, the film's poor reception hasn't prevented him from auditioning for a role in the Star Wars universe or considering playing a superhero on the big screen -- even if he's yet to take the next step.

Written and directed by David Lowery, The Green Knight opens in U.S. theaters on July 30. Patel stars as Sir Gawain opposite a cast that includes Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton and Ralph Ineson as the titular emerald-skinned tester of men.
