A pyrrhic victory is one where the winning side loses so much in their effort that it's almost not worth the win. The victors lose a huge number of allies, fail to prevent tragedy, or their victory sets up something much, much worse in the future. Pyrrhic victories are often used to keep things compelling in superhero fiction and to prevent the heroes from having too easy a time of things.
