The long-discussed reboot of The Greatest American Hero is moving forward, with a twist.
The Tracking Board reports ABC has ordered a pilot for the half-hour sitcom, which this time centers on a female superhero.
The original series, which aired from 1981 to 1983, starred Will Katt as school teacher Ralph Hinkley who, during a school field trip, encounters aliens that give him a suit that endows him with superhuman abilities. Unfortunately, Ralph promptly loses the instructions, leading him to discover many of the costume’s powers by accident.
The reboot focuses on a 30-year-old woman named Meera, “who loves tequila and karaoke and has spent her life searching and failing to find meaning, much to the chagrin of her traditional Indian-American family.” The rest of the premise remains largely unchanged, with Meera “entrusted with a super suit to protect the planet.”
The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller attempted to reboot the series in 2015 and 2016, but those efforts obviously never took flight. This new project, produced by Fresh Off the Boat writer and producer Rachna Fruchbom and spearheaded by showrunner Nahnatchka Khan, is still only in its pilot stage.
