Paramount+ released the first trailer for its upcoming original series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

Rise of the Pink Ladies will serve as a prequel to the 1978 movie musical Grease, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The first trailer for the Paramount+ original series will follow the "rise of the original girl gang," set four years before the events of Grease. The series premieres on Paramount+ on April 6.

The 10-episode series will take place four years before the events of Grease, "before rock 'n' roll ruled" and "the T-Birds were the coolest in the school." Rise of the Pink Ladies will follow four "fed-up, outcast girls" who will "dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever." Rise of the Pink Ladies received the green light in July 2021, with a series order from Paramount for 10 episodes. At the time, the prequel show was the first series pickup for the streamer under Nicole Clemens, who at the time was the new head of original programming.

Rise of the Pink Ladies will be produced by Paramount Television Studios, though the series was originally developed by Paramount's parent company, ViacomCBS, for HBO Max, now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. However, HBO Max passed on the series, leading Rise of the Pink Ladies to become a Paramount+ original series.

Paramount Pictures' Grease was released in theaters in 1978 and was based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Taking place in the 1950s, the film followed the love story of Travolta's Danny Zuko and Newton-John's Sandy. As a new student at Rydell High, Sandy falls in with a group of greaser girls called the Pink Ladies. The group was led by Betty Rizzo, played by Stockard Channing, and included Frenchy (Didi Conn), Jan (Jamie Donnelly) and Marty Maraschino (Dinah Manoff).

Apart from the prequel series, it was reported in 2019 that Paramount was also developing a Grease prequel movie titled Summer Loving from Aladdin writer John August. The film will tell the story behind the classic song of the same name, sung by Travolta and Newton-John in Grease, detailing the summer romance that sparked their relationship in the film.
