The CW previously teased that Eobard Thawne would return in "Armageddon, Part 4," stating that Thawne would return "in the most unexpected way, and with a tie to a loved one," after the character's team-up with Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) was promised in August of this year.

"So at the end of last season, Reverse-Flash -- he's a pretty pissed-off dude," said The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace on the character's return. "Why? Because The Flash is faster now...If there's one question that 'Armageddon' answers, it's, 'Well, if you can't outrun your foe, what do you do to beat him? That's where Eobard Thawne will start in 'Armageddon.' That's really the question for him, and that question gets answered throughout all of Season 8, in weird and unexpected ways."

In a previous interview, Wallace stated that "Armageddon" is unlike any other Arrowverse crossover that came before it. For one thing, according to Wallace, "Armageddon" won't "see a moment with 20 heroes and villains all fighting at once," both because the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic made it unsafe, but because it wasn't the story they were trying to tell. In fact, Wallace clarified that "Armageddon" is not a crossover at all, but a "five-part special Flash event, which means it's a Flash story, a Flash graphic novel that's a little bit bigger, a little bit wilder."

"Armageddon" pits Barry Allen and the rest of Team Flash against the telepathic alien Despero (Tony Curran). While this is not a crossover, it does feature several characters from other Arrowverse series, including Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Ryan Wilder/Batwoman (Leslie), Mia Smoak/Green Arrow (Katherine McNamara), Ray Palmer/Atom (Brandon Routh), and Ryan Choi (Chau), who appeared in the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover.

The Flash Season 8 airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
