Godzilla vs. Kong shows an older King Kong than previous MonsterVerse films. Director Adam Wingard discussed how Clint Eastwood's look influenced Kong's latest appearance.

"I saw my version [of King Kong] being Clint Eastwood from Unforgiven," Wingard told Yahoo! Entertainment. He added, "He's the gunfighter without the gunfight. He’s grizzled, he’s tired, he's got a longer beard and all these kinds of things. He's bulkier, too. He’s kind of bulked up a little bit more, pro-wrestling-style so that he can hold his own with Godzilla."

Wingard also shared that he saw Kong's appearance in Kong: Skull Island as being similar to Eastwood's appearance in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

Unforgiven is not the only film Godzilla vs. Kong used as inspiration for its epic kaiju battle. During Kong's first face-off against Godzilla, Kong leaps off an exploding building in a homage to Die Hard. Later, during the final battle against Mechagodzilla, Kong pops his dislocated shoulder against a building -- a callback to Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon 2.

Wingard's next project will be a sequel to Face/Off. At the time of this writing, it's unknown if the MonsterVerse will have additional films in the works.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
