The hit TV series Gotham has brought the world of DC comics to life in a way we never have saw before. Showing the young life of Bruce Wayne and focusing on the story of Jim Gordon, we’ve finally gotten a show that gives more depth to the Batman universe in a way DC shows haven’t before. We’ve been introduced to a whole cast of interesting characters, heroes and villains alike, complete their dramatic backstories and crazy shenanigans, but one thing will always stand out: costumes and wardrobe.

The superhero world has always heavily focused on the looks of characters -- how else would you know these are genuine heroes and not just your average everyday vigilante? While heroes usually have flashy logos, they aren’t the only ones that need to stand out -- a villain’s attire says everything about them. When you look at a person in the comic book world, you can almost instantly tell they’re a villain by their overly dark clothing and features, but it’s unfortunately not that easy to translate this into a success on the screen. When it comes to shows like Gotham, those colorful villain suits and strange looks simply won’t work and could upset the fan base. There needs to be an even mix of comic book accuracy and practical real-world looks so that these shows don't look like a corny children’s cartoon come to life. Luckily, there have been several appearances on Gotham that have been stunning recreations! Here are ten amazing villain looks and ten that could have used some improvement.

20 LOOKS GOOD: THE PENGUIN

The Penguin has always been an iconic character in the Batman universe, and he’s well known for his suspicious antics and peculiar look. In the comics, he was a large man with a cane and your typical rich-man-look complete with top hat and monocle. Fans were pretty surprised when they reimagined his entire look for the new show, but it was pretty interesting to see him during his start in Gotham.

We like this goth-esque look for Penguin -- it makes him a little more modern and certainly is one of the best reimagined looks on the show. Because his original comic design was so cartoonish, it would have seemed strange to have his real-life makeup look similar -- we like how they balanced it!

19 LOOKS BAD: BUTCH GILZEAN

Butch is the right-hand man of… well, a couple of people. While his loyalty originally was with Fish, after she passes away he was tossed around between characters like Penguin and Tabitha, eventually taking on his own position in Gotham’s underworld. Butch is a great character, don’t get us wrong, but he doesn’t really look like he's menacing or, worse yet, intimidating in the least.

This all comes to light when you consider that a lot of his look hasn’t changed since he was with Fish -- he’s always looked a little out of place and, if anything, he looks like he belongs to the Falcone family rather than most of the people he’s been working for.

18 GOOD: THE RIDDLER

We simply love that the Riddler wasn’t changed too drastically for Gotham. Ed’s story has been one of the best in the series so far, as his fall from grace and black hole of insanity have made him someone that should be feared. From a dorky shy guy we find out that all of those smarts really do come in handy when you want to apply them to something deadlier.

The Riddler was always known for his green suit, which sometimes had a bunch of question marks on it. Again, this kind of costume isn’t completely practical for a realistic-looking show, so the clean green suit and iconic bowler hat are a really nice nod to the original comic character.

17 LOOKS BAD: POISON IVY

Ivy is one of the most beloved and iconic female characters from the DC universe, so when we saw her on-screen as a little kid we were pretty excited that she was included in the show. Her relationship to Selena, and later Bruce, expanded the amount of people Bruce could interact and relate to with as a kid himself.

But the storyline took a really strange turn when it came to the aging of Ivy -- it’s uncomfortable knowing she’s still mentally a child and she’s being treated much like her adult version. A lot of her outfits do fit the original comic book character, but with the show’s current storyline, it just feels a little off.

16 LOOKS GOOD: THE JOKER

This costume sort of goes hand in hand because there isn’t really a Joker just yet -- this is obviously in the early days before the infamous villain comes to power. However, between the twin brothers Jerome and Jeremiah there have been several nods to the Joker’s classic costumes.

Jerome’s missing face seems to be a nod to the times Joker’s face has gone missing and considered an artifact amongst fanatics while Jeremiah seems to have the classic pale face and red lips that makes the Joker’s famous look -- that and the hat and suit seem to also be reminiscent of the older and animated Jokers we’ve seen in the past.

15 LOOKS BAD: THE ELECTROCUTIONER

The name "Electrocutioner" kind of says it all don’t you think? Even looking at him, it’s obvious that he's the guy that shocks people -- it's literally his whole deal, for the most part. That being said, with all the fun costumes they’ve recreated or reimagined in the Gotham series, this one wasn’t really all that great.

Surely, it was practical from the rubber elements to the actual device strapped to his chest, but it’s just not some of the team’s best work when it comes to this show’s wardrobe. Surely, we’ve seen better villains with better looks that make them more memorable to the viewers.

14 LOOKS GOOD: MR. FREEZE

Mr. Freeze is one of those classic villains with a horrific backstory that makes almost anyone understand why he does what he does. The love he has for his wife and the want to save her drives him over the edge and pushes him to be willing to do anything.

But we love the design Gotham has brought to life for Freeze -- even the contacts really help give him a chilling effect. What’s great about this costume is that even if you weren’t watching the show or familiar with the DC stories, you could probably tell what Freeze’s capabilities are without even knowing the obvious name.

13 LOOKS BAD: THE RED HOOD GANG

The Red Hood Gang have been one of the most influential groups in the entire DC Universe, but we have to admit that they’ve not always been the most fashionable. Really, the Red Hood Gang just wears red ski masks with the eye wholes cut out of it -- not really something that would strike fear into people.

Simple and recognizable, it definitely works for them, but it doesn’t mean that it was something the show’s creators really needed to think about when it came to the costume design. It would have been nice to see something a little different for them this time around.

12 LOOKS GOOD: THE MAD HATTER

The Mad Hatter was an interesting, and very dark villain, during the third season of Gotham that seemed to send people into a hypnotic state so that they would do his bidding. His strange love for his sister added another layer to his villainy as we find out that she was harassed by her brother and seemed to almost feel safer in the walls of Arkham Asylum than with him.

A questionable villain like this deserves an equally fitting look -- one that was actually very well done. We like that he has the top hat and a clean suit with long hair. It’s a nod to both the Alice In Wonderland Mad Hatter that the actual comic book character that was based after him.

11 LOOKS BAD: EVIL BRUCE

Everyone was probably a little shocked when they saw a clone of Bruce Wayne himself step out of Arkham Asylum; because there’s nothing more confusing then having two characters that look and act exactly alike. The more we find out about this “evil” version of Bruce, the more we find out that he seems to be a very lonely child who’s being used.

Regardless of how interesting (or uninteresting) his storyline is, his costume was pretty much non-existent. The only way we could tell them apart at first was the fact that he had long hair, which he would later cut to look more like Bruce. We get that the point is to be exactly the same, but in this respect it just seemed a little lacking for most villains.

10 LOOKS BAD: CLAYFACE

Clayface wasn’t really the best when it came to looks -- they really just gave him some contacts and called it a day. In all fairness, the previous incarnations of Clayface have always been a cluster of beige blobs that can help turn into what or whoever he wants.

This could be a hard thing to transfer into the show, but it was still a bit of a letdown. With the show reimagining plenty of other exaggerated characters to fit this real-world setting, we have to wonder if this minimalist look is just the beginning of what we’ll see from Clayface in the television series.

9 LOOKS GOOD: FIREFLY

Firefly is a firebug, literally, that no one can really hold a candle to when it comes to her awesome flame-throwing abilities. Puns aside, we really did like Bridgit’s background story and the struggle of her everyday life.

The fact that she was horribly burned and still uses fire as her main weapon of choice is pretty admirable; although some of this fearlessness did come from being reborn in Arkham Asylum. The suit was really clean and those goggles really bring out any of the damage she’s doing by reflecting the flames right back at her. Honestly, she’s just all around great.

8 LOOKS GOOD: FISH MOONEY

Fish Mooney was a completely new character that came with the Gotham series and she was instantly loved by fans. Who could say no to the way she ran things and how powerful she always was in both personality and look? One thing is for sure though, you never want to get on her bad side.

Part of this is thanks to Jada Smith’s wonderful acting, but the other part is her entire look. Her outfits were always on point but when she finally became a real villain, her costume paired with that mismatched blue eye gave her a more complete and powerful look.

7 LOOKS BAD: RA'S AL GHUL

Ra’s al Ghul is an iconic character in the DC Universe -- everyone loves him for his interesting story and the amount of power he wields. We’ve seen the leader of assassins show up numerous times in DC movies and television shows, but we were pretty excited to see him in the new Gotham television series as he fought a young Bruce.

We love the casting of Game of Thrones alum Alexander Siddig, but the outfit choice was a little strange. Granted, even in the comics, Ra’s has always worn very gaudy clothing, but doesn’t his whole look seem just a little strange for someone who is supposed to be leading assassins?

6 LOOKS GOOD: VICTOR ZSASZ

Victor Zsasz is the hitman and enforcer for Carmine Falcone -- he’s a ruthless mercenary with a huge loyalty to the Falcone family for the majority of the time we know him. Of course, this does change for a short period of time where he allies with Penguin after Falcone’s retirement.

He’s known for carving scars into his body for every life he takes, and there are a lot of scars beneath his nice suits. We love the clean look Victor has and his actor simply brings this creepy layer through his actions. His look is definitely spot on and looks like he’s a part of the mafia-like family.

5 LOOKS BAD: THE EXECUTIONER

The Executioner was one of the more emotional stories we saw during the Tetch virus outbreak. The once noble Captain Barnes suddenly turned into a crazed maniac bent on his idea of justice. Despite the issues he had with Gordon, you knew that he really just wanted to help him, even through he was going through strife of his own.

It was emotional to see him loose control. However, the fact that Barnes even had to put on a costume complete with black eye makeup was a little strange. It just looked out of place and strange to see someone like Barnes in a large leather suit so that he could fulfill justice. Then again, Batman seems to also think this is a good idea.

4 LOOKS GOOD: HUGO STRANGE

Hugo Strange had a look that made him exceptionally creepy and one doctor you would never want to visit. Strange is the Chief of Psychiatry and director of Arkham Asylum but, as the plot thickens in this particular storyline, we find out that he’s been running some of his own personal experiments within the walls of the asylum.

The acting was fantastic, but we also love everything from the beard to the glasses that have been iconic for his character. Even in the comics, these elements were important, so it only stands to reason that they were put in the show’s version.

3 LOOKS BAD: MARIO FALCONE

Mario Falcone was supposed to be this new nice guy that Lee was dating after Jim and honestly, we don’t blame her, Jim wasn’t really the best boyfriend out there. But Mario also wasn’t that great as a person and his entire look pretty much screamed, “I’m part of the Falcone family!”

Gotham has done nothing to make sure he doesn't look like he’s from a major underground family. While maybe this wasn't meant to be a secret, we wish the showrunners put a little more effort into his look. He was really meant to be this character that sort of pushed away his father’s life and instead he sort of looked like a character out of The Godfather.

2 LOOKS GOOD: THEO GALAVAN/AZRAEL

Theo Galavan being resurrected as Azrael was a great plotline in the story and was one of the more engaging stories during Gotham's run. Hugo Strange was able to reanimate Theo’s body and gave him the story of a holy crusader.

Most of the people Hugo was experimenting on were pretty crazed, but Theo had a really interesting twist to his story as he wanted to bring a sense of justice where others seemed to only bring chaos. We really love the look they gave him -- it’s simple but still menacing. The look was still a good nod to the original costume from the comics.

1 LOOKS BAD: THE COURT OF OWLS

The Court of Owls is the big bosses that seem to rule the city of Gotham from behind the curtain. They’ve had a hand in almost every major event and no one would dare double cross them -- except for maybe Bruce Wayne. While their look is pretty ominous, we’re not so sure it’s the best they could do.

The masks seem a little strange looking. We know they’re supposed to look like owls, but really, they just look like a taxidermy job gone wrong. However, it does achieve the goal of making the people seem anonymous so at the very least if fulfills its purpose.
