Gotham has cast David W. Thompson in the role of Jonathan Crane, replacing original actor Charlie Tahan.

The man who's destined to become Batman villain Scarecrow has been portrayed by Tahan since Season 1, appearing in the episodes "The Fearsome Dr. Crane" and "The Scarecrow." Tahan last appeared in the Season 4 premiere, "Pax Penguina."

According to TV Line, he leaves Gotham just as his other series, the crime drama Ozark, gets a second-season order from Netflix. Tahan's role as a series regular was seemingly getting in the way, so the recast was necessary to move forward with the character.

Thompson (Green Room, Blue Rain) is expected to make his debut as Jonathan Crane sometime in the spring.

The Fox series is no stranger to recasting roles. Clare Foley was originally cast as Ivy Pepper until Season 3, when she was replaced by the older Maggie Geha. Peyton List has since taken over the role for Season 4.

Returning March 1 on Fox, Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Cameron Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
