When Gotham returns later this month for Season 4, viewers will likely notice the city has become a little more crowded, with sinister threats like ScarecrowSolomon Grundy and Sofia Falcone all making their presence felt. However, they won't be the only thorns in Bruce Wayne's side, as Batman villain Lazlo Valentin, aka Professor Pyg will also pay a visit.

TVLine reports that Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris (Fringe, The Good Wife, The Tick) will appear as Professor Pyg in a multi-episode arc.

“Michael is one of my best friends,” executive producer Danny Cannon told the website.. “He was in my film school graduation movie, when we were both amateurs. And now he’s joining the fold as Professor Pyg.”

Much like the Court of Owls, which remained a looming threat over the course of Season 3, Professor Pyg is a more recent addition to DC Comics lore. Introduced in 2007 by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert in Batman #666, he's usually depicted as having a desire to transform people into an idealized state by fitting them will doll-like masks and transforming them into Dollotrons. Morrison has described Pyg as "one of the weirdest, most insane characters that's ever been in Batman."

Returning Thursday, Sept. 21, on Fox, Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Cameron Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
