WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the Season 5 premiere of Gotham, "Year Zero," which aired Thursday on Fox.
For the past four seasons, Gotham has been slowly putting the pieces in place for young Bruce Wayne embrace his destiny as the city's dark savior. Now, with the end of the Batman prequel in sight, the series has begun the sprint toward that goal. With the Season 5 premiere, the drama demonstrates it's no longer holding anything back. Heck, it's even clearing the decks, and showing that some longtime characters may not end to see the finale.
In what's sure to be a shock to viewers, "Year Zero" depicts the death of Tabitha Galavan, aka Tigress, played by Jessica Lucas'.
Set three months after the events of the Season 4 finale, "Year Zero" finds Gotham in ruins, with criminals fighting for territory, and everyday citizens struggling to survive. Everything comes to a head when a Wayne Enterprises helicopter is flown in by Bruce Wayne to deliver food and supplies, only for it to be shot down by an unseen assailant. It doesn't take long for many of the series' major players to reach the crash site.
First on the scene is Oswald Cobblepot, who faces direct threats from James Gordon and Tabitha Galavan, the latter of whom still seeks revenge against Penguin for the death of her Butch Gilzean. Tabitha and Oswald have alternately been at each other's side and throats throughout the series, but that complicated dynamic reaches its conclusion with this episode.
Tabitha gets the drop on Penguin, and holds him at gunpoint. However, when she finally pulls the trigger, the gun misfires -- a result of a dwindling ammunition supply within the city. That provides Oswald with the opening he needs to stab Tabitha in the heart.
Tabitha debuted in Gotham's Season 2 premiere, when she moved to the city her villainous brother Theo Galavan. She became a series mainstay, largely through her partnership with Barbara Kean. Together, they became known as the Sirens, a name rooted in DC comics.
Her death marks the first major casualty of Gotham's final season -- but it likely won't be the last.
Airing Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox, Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
