An extended trailer for the upcoming fourth season of Fox’s Gotham puts the season’s big bad up front – after an extended catch-up session that traces the rise of both Bruce Wayne and his various nemeses across the crime-riddle streets of Gotham City. As the trailer concludes, attention turns to Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon and the next villain he will find himself squaring off against: the Scarecrow.

The video bears a striking resemblance to the Scarecrow-centric trailer first shown at Comic Con International in San Diego, though fans will get a better glimpse of the fear-manipulating scientist in this new video. Aside from a good look at his costume, the trailer also offers flashes of surreal horrors, likely the result of Jonathan Crane’s fear toxin infecting the citizens of Gotham.

Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Scarecrow debuted in World's Finest Comics #3 in 1941. The character only appeared in a couple issues before being shelved for 26 years. In 1967, Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff brought the character back, this time touting his infamous fear gas. Charlie Tahan has played the character on Gotham since the show’s first season – this season will see him finally adopt his nefarious identity.

Starring Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Victoria Cartagena, Andrew Stewart-Jones, John Doman, Jada Pinkett Smith and Morena Baccarin, Gotham will return to Fox for its fourth season on Sept. 21.
