As "Gotham" has progressed over the past three seasons, viewers have watched as the people who would become some of Batman’s most memorable villains inched ever-closer to taking on those personas. Now with the show’s return with last night's aptly named episode “How the Riddler Got His Name,” Edward Nygma takes that final step -- not only do we watch him become the Riddler in name and action, but he even puts on a version of the iconic costume at last.

During a Q&A press event in New York City attended by CBR earlier this month, actor Cory Michael Smith was asked what it was like donning the green suit and finally play the Riddler. Smith admitted that the experience was “really cool.”

“I feel like in the two and a half years up to this episode, and now three [years], I feel like I’m playing a very different person," Smith told reporters. "Someone that’s gone through quite an intense and severe evolution and I like that it took this long. It feels like he earned this identity."

Of course, part of that identity is wearing a familiar suit and hat. There’s no cane yet, but Gotham’s version of the outfit gives Smith an impressive Riddler look that’s recognizable and yet has that Gotham twist. Smith described to press what it was like finding the right suit.

“I went for the fitting and we were putting me in green suits, but they were pretty muted or matte finish on the fabric and then I went in for this green suit and it’s actually in person kind of shimmery and I was like, ‘Oh god. That’s really green. That’s really bright,’ because in the show all the colors are a bit darker and lower tones so I was like ‘I’m going to look like a goddamn chandelier walking through a room!’ But it’s really exciting," he said. "It feels like the flamboyance that he’s trying to put forward to impress people is captured in it. It’s nice."

It was at this point that actor Ben McKenzie, who plays Det. Jim Gordon, chimed in to say he’s constantly jealous of everyone’s clothes. He may wear very nice suits, but they apparently don’t compare to the Riddler’s impressive new look, or what many of the others get to wear.

Whether or not a cane is in the Riddler’s future, seeing Ed wear the suit and hat looks to be a pivotal moment for "Gotham," and it will be interesting to see how the outfit, and Nygma’s new life as the Riddler, continues to evolve on the show.

"Gotham" airs 8 p.m. Mondays on Fox.
