Edward Nygma has always liked riddles, but the character is poised to step up his game in a big way when "Gotham" returns from its winter break on April 24. The former Gotham City Police Department forensic scientist takes one more step down the road to officially becoming The Riddler as he dons the iconic Batman villain's familiar green suit and bowler in a new teaser for the show's final run of the season.

Nygma, as portrayed by actor Cory Michael Smith, has been heading down the road to villainy for quite some time now. Originally working on the side of good (or as good as you can get in Gotham City), Nygma went completely off the rails when he allowed his temper to get the best of him, resulting in the deaths of the love of his life Kriten Kringle and her abusive boyfriend, a GCPD officer.

While incarcerated at Arkham Asylum, Nygma forged a strong bond with the Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), and upon being deemed sane enough to be released to the world once more, joined Cobblepot's team as the crime lord made a run at becoming mayor of Gotham City. Following Penguin's win, Nygma once again found love with Isabella, who happened to be the spitting image of Ms. Kringle. Penguin's jealousy over the pair's developing romance led to Isabella's demise, which in turn has led to Nygma becoming more unhinged and violent, a metamorphosis set to come to a head when the series returns from its current hiatus.

Returning Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox, “Gotham” is set in Batman’s home city back before the Dark Knight Detective started his nocturnal patrols and stars Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordon, David Mazouz as young Bruce Wayne, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Camren Bicondova as young Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins and Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney.
