Following an ominous Halloween video on the Gotham YouTube channel, Cameron Monaghan, who plays Jeremiah Velska on the series, has released three photos that show a softer side of his proto-Joker -- and showcases someone who may be the show's version of Harley Quinn.
Uploaded on Monaghan's Instagram account, the photos reveal Jeremiah and a mysterious woman dancing in what appears to be an abandoned warehouse in a scene that evokes the climax of the first Tim Burton Batman film, which saw the Joker hold Vicki Vale hostage in the Gotham cathedral.
Adding to the eeriness, a bright light shines in through the boarded up windows and the woman wears a black and white dress, completing the bizarrely romantic mood of the photos. Monaghan comments: "For some people, every day is Halloween".
Originally created for Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn served as the Joker's right-hand woman and source of comic relief for the series, though as the show progressed it became clear that the Joker had no love in his heart for Harley. The character has since made the leap to other media, such as the Injustice fighting game series, a short-lived Birds of Prey TV series and 2016's Suicide Squad, where she was played by Margot Robbie.
Returning Thursday, Jan. 3 on Fox, Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
