Gotham Knights TV series is in the works at The CW.

According to Variety, the series will follow Batman's "rebellious adopted son," who "forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights."

Casting details and a release date were not announced. It is also unclear who the "rebellious adopted son" is. In the comics, Batman has no shortage of rebellious children and sidekicks, including Jason Todd /Red Hood and Damian Wayne / Robin.

Based on the DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, The CW series is not a spinoff to Batwoman, nor is it related to the upcoming Gotham Knights video game from  WB Games Montréal and  Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Natalie Abrams, James Stoteraux and Chad Fiveash will write the project, with Stoteraux and Fiveash serving as executive producers and Abrams co-executive producing. Arrowverse overlord Greg Berlanti will also executive produce, along with Arrowverse producer Sarah Schechter and David Madden.

Stoteraux and Fiveash are currently executive producing Batwoman, which is in the middle of its third season. They also worked on Fox's Gotham and Syfy's Krypton. Abrams has previously written for Supergirl and Batwoman.

Gotham Knights will join a long list of CW TV series based on DC characters that began with Arrow in 2012. Other series include The Flash, Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, Stargirl, Superman & Lois and the upcoming Naomi.

This would not be the first time the complicated relationship between Batman and his "adopted children" were portrayed. HBO Max's Titans also took a dark route with its portrayal of the relationship between the Caped Crusader and his sidekicks, Dick Grayson / Nightwing and Todd.
