WB Games Montréal, the comic book loving Canadian company responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins, unveiled the trailer for the next DC game– Gotham Knights– a few weeks ago. The trailer revealed a whole new world for DC gaming fans to conquer, and began to answer some fan theories with facts.

Fans had a long list of characters they were hoping to play in the game, but it looks like the choice is down to four "knights" who will try to keep order in the city. On the villain’s side, there are faves like Poison Ivy and Dr. Freeze revealed thus far. All will be revealed when the game releases sometime next year, but until then, there are some exciting details that the trailer gives away.

10 Red Hood Is The Craziest Brawler

From what the trailer shows, it looks like Jason, aka Red Hood, is the brawler extraordinaire of this game. He’s the only one who uses a gun. Jason is the first character seen in the trailer, and a long scar on the side of his face is immediately noticeable. It’s not the stylized J brand of the Arkham Knight game, but rather. a long irregular gash that would have come from Jason’s deadly encounter with Joker— which seems to be part of the Gotham Knights backstory.

9 Gameplay Details Revealed

Gotham Knights

A gameplay trailer was made available for fans along with the trailer for the game itself. The gameplay saw Batgirl and Robin paired as a superhero team in a co-op game mode that is only available online. In the gameplay trailer, it shows that Mr. Freeze can control the weather, and naturally he’s lowering the temperature of Gotham City which brings on huge storms and weather disruptions. The action for the game is similar to many other contemporary third-person brawlers.

8 Characters Can Be Customized

Each character has different abilities and styles of play, but even within each character, there are a number of customizable elements. The trailer shows Batgirl in different versions of her outfit, for example, based around her "Batgirl of Burnside" look. Through gameplay, weapons and tactical gear can be modified and upgraded, along with the look of the suit for each character. Two players in co-op mode could play completely different versions of the same character in theory, including both the look and how they play.

7 Multiple Storylines

In the gameplay trailer, it is mentioned that the player viewers are seeing is about halfway through the Mr. Freeze storyline. While nothing else is specified, it seems to imply that there are other storylines– and presumably other villains.

WB Games Montréal's Twitter account has also let it slip that Two-Face can also be played as one of the villains. In an interview with IGN, one of the game developers confirmed that the detail was meant to be a clue for fans that there was more to come.

6 It’s A Non-Arkham Universe

Gotham Knights Bruce Wayne Batman

The new-look scar on Jason’s face is only one of the clues that indicate Gotham Knights takes place in a different universe than the Arkham games. One of the most obvious is the announcement that begins the trailer– Bruce Wayne/Batman has died, clearing the way for a new generation of heroes to take over.

Barbara Gordon’s wheelchair is in view, but she’s no longer confined to it, and she has taken back her place at Batgirl. If that wasn’t enough evidence from the trailer, more than one game developer has confirmed as much on social media.

5 The Court Of Owls Is Finally Appearing In A Game

Gotham Knights Court of Owls talon reveal

In the trailer, Batgirl and Nightwing walk down what looks like an old and partially-ruined corridor. There are two large owl statues at the end of the hall. It seems like an obvious clue to the presence of the Court of Owls in the game.

The Court of Owls has only been around in the comics since 2011, and they are linked to Dick Grayson in that the Court recruited members of his family to become Talon assassins. The Court of Owls nursery rhyme is also repeated at the end of the trailer, further confirming their involvement in the game.

4 Bat Left The Belfry

Gotham Knights - the Belfry

In Batman’s video message, he says that the Bat Cave was blown up. But he’s left the Bat fam The Belfry, a secret facility that was built into the old Wayne Tower building. In fact, in the comics, it’s Tim Drake (now Robin) who helped him build it.

Batman also mentions that the tech is older and may be outdated, which may be a clue that game players may be able to upgrade the facility in some way. As the trailer shows briefly, it’s where players will see the characters out of their disguises.

3 Places That Are Familiar...Yet Unfamiliar

Gotham Knights

It’s clear that the game developers were steeped in the DC Comics canon, but they gave it a new stamp. The location of Gotham Knights has the characteristic dark tone and similar architecture to other versions of Gotham in video games, but this Gotham City is unique.

Its layout is different, and players will have to get used to it. There are brief views of something that looks like one of the Joker’s puzzle rooms, full of lethal traps, but is the Joker himself lurking in the game?

2 The GCPD Can’t Be Trusted

Bruce Wayne isn’t the only one who’s died– the trailer shows that Jim Gordon died some time before the start of the story. Wayne briefly says that the GCPD can’t be trusted, and it means that the Gotham Knights– including Jim’s daughter Barbara as Batgirl– will have to fight on their own, without the help and information from their traditional allies in the police department. A GCPD helicopter is seen harassing Batgirl in the gameplay trailer.

1 Robin Collects An Item

Gotham Knights

The gameplay trailer revealed some tantalizing details. In addition to gaining points, at one point, after using his stealth abilities to sneak up on someone, Robin quickly collects an indicator that pops up from the body he took down. If he’s collecting items, it may indicate that there is a capacity to build something new with it in the game – a crafting system. It may also add to the character’s abilities, or even be a way to add new elements to their costumes.
