DC fans have openly criticized the quality of The CW's Gotham Knights following the release of the upcoming superhero series' first trailer.

The Gotham Knights trailer introduced viewers to Oscar Morgan's Turner Hayes, the "rebellious adopted son" of Bruce Wayne, who must form "an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader." Fans were quick to point out how the show looked as if it had no budget, in addition to stating that Gotham Knights felt like a low point for the Batman property.

Gotham Knights was ordered to series in May 2022 after being in development since December 2021. The project hails from writers Natalie Abrams, James Stoteraux and Chad Fiveash, who also executive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. However, unlike Berlanti's previous DC series for The CW, Gotham Knights will not be set in the Arrowverse, a shared universe that began with Arrow and The Flash. The series is also not connected to the upcoming video game of the same name from WB Games Montréal and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, despite the shared premise of Batman being dead.

Gotham Knights will pull several characters from the Batman mythology including Harvey Dent, who will be played by Supernatural's Misha Collins. The actor previously revealed that Harvey Dent has not yet become his villainous alter-ego Two-Face in Gotham Knights. "My character will be Harvey Dent for the whole first year," he said in April 2022. "So I have a nice long stretch of not being two-faced. And then I become Two-Face! Yeah, I'm looking forward to it and I'll be the old person on the show!"

In addition to Harvey Dent, Gotham Knights stars notable Bat-Family members Carrie Kelley (Navia Ziraili Robinson), Stephanie Brown (Anne Lore) and Harper Row (Fallon Smythe), who in the comics fight crime as Robin, Spoiler and Bluebird, respectively. It is unknown at this time if any of the characters will use these superhero aliases in Gotham Knights though Carrie hinted at her secret identity in the trailer, saying Batman used to call her "his little robin."

The cast also includes Tyler DiChiara Harper's brother Cullen Row and Olivia Rose Keegan as Duela, who is rumored to be the Joker's daughter in the series but has also claimed to be the offspring of Two-Face in certain Batman comics. Rahart Adams rounds out the series' main cast as Brody.

Gotham Knights is scheduled for a mid-season premiere on The CW.
