Developer WB Games Montreal has explained how and why DC's premier hero team the Justice League makes an appearance in its upcoming game, Gotham Knights.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Ann Lemay -- the narrative director at WB Games Montreal -- broke down why the creative team felt like the Justice League should be included in a game primarily set in Gotham City. As she explained, "Gotham Knights is a self-contained story that happens in the city. They are part of a larger universe and we're never going to be like, 'Oh, they're just in their little bubble.'"

The initial reveal that the Justice League was a part of the Gotham Knights setting came when the developer launched a new trailer focused exclusively on Tim Drake's Robin. It showed off his in-game combat techniques, alternative uniforms and a surprising ability -- short-range teleportation. Throughout the trailer, Drake can be seen getting the drop on unsuspecting thugs and zapping from place to place in the blink of an eye. This ability is explained in the video as a toned-down application of the technology available within the Justice League's satellite.

This small mention in the trailer confirms the existence of other powers and organizations, such as the Justice League, within the game's world. As for why the developer gave Drake this shiny new toy, Lemay stated, "For us, using the Justice League satellite teleportation for Robin just made complete sense. He knows it's there, he leverages it for himself in combat. It was obvious for us to use." Outside of the trailer's cameo, Lemay states, "...there might be references, but that's about as far as we'll be going."

Even though the Justice League won't be front and center, Gotham Knights will give players plenty to look forward to. Set in an open-world Gotham, gamers will explore the dark streets as one of four main characters: Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing and Redhood. Each possesses a unique skill set for taking down criminals, and gamers can find which play style fits them best by swapping characters throughout the story. For those who would like a partner to patrol with, the game also comes with a co-op capability where the second player can drop in and out of the adventure as desired.

Gotham Knights comes out on October 25 for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
