Batman: The Dark Knight Returns villain the Mutant Leader made his live-action debut in the latest episode of The CW's Gotham Knights.

After appearing in the pilot episode, the Mutant Gang make their proper debut in Gotham Knights Episode 3, "Under Pressure," with Keil Oakley Zepernick playing the gang's leader, Vernon Wagner. The episode also establishes a rivalry between the Mutant Leader and Carrie Kelly/Robin (Navia Robinson) after the latter successfully defeates the former in a fight, leading to his arrest by the GCPD. Later in the episode, Carrie reveales that the Mutant Leader was responsible for ruining her neighborhood, leading to her indirectly becoming Batman's partner. Much to Carrie's dismay, the Mutant Leader is released from custody by the end of the episode, with the series strongly teasing a future match-up between the two characters later in the season.

Gotham Knights Adapts Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns

The Mutant Leader, the Mutant Gang and the Carrie Kelley version of Robin all originate in Frank Miller's acclaimed four-issue comic book miniseries The Dark Knight Returns, which was first published by DC in 1986. Set in a dystopian version of Gotham City, The Dark Knight Returns follows Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement as Batman to put an end to the Mutant Gang's crime spree. Inspired by Batman, Carrie Kelley creates her own Robin suit, later helping the Caped Crusader against the Mutants. DC and Warner Bros. previously adapted The Dark Knight Returns as a two-part animated film, with the Mutant Leader and Carrie Kelley/Robin being voiced by Gary Anthony Williams and Ariel Winter, respectively. With the Mutant Leader's introduction, Gotham Knights seems to be loosely adapting certain elements from The Dark Knight Returns.

Despite Carrie Kelley's personal vendetta against the Mutants, the villainous gang are not the primary antagonists of Gotham Knights Season 1. Instead, the Court of Owls, a criminal organization and secret society made up of the wealthiest and most influential citizens of Gotham City, will be the main focus of the season, with Bruce Wayne's adopted son Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan) investigating the Court's involvement in not only his father's death but also Bruce's parents' death. Episode 2, "The Scene of the Crime," revealed that Joe Chill was possibly hired by the Court to kill Thomas and Martha Wayne, meaning their death was not an unfortunate coincidence, but rather a planned assassination.
