WB Games Montréal's upcoming Gotham Knights release has already been confirmed to take place in its own universe separate from the Batman: Arkham games. Now it has also been officially announced that the combat system for this new interpretation of Gotham City will differ as well.In an interview with Games Radar, Gotham Knights executive producer Fleur Marty explained, "We have entirely redesigned the combat system in order for it to work well in co-op, because that part of the experience is really exciting for us."RELATED: Gotham Knights Details Red Hood's Weapons, Tactical Armor

Marty further elaborated that Gotham Knights' in-game mechanics will still share some remnant similarities to the Arkham series, given that the game will still be a brawler, "But it is in many ways very different. Designing a combat system from scratch has its challenges indeed, but it's been a very stimulating one and we're very proud of the result," he said.

The announcement of co-op play was paramount in creating a distinct separation between Gotham Knights and the Arkham games, the latter of which functioned solely as a single player experience. Marty explained, "The two-player dynamic fits the fantasy and the Gotham setting. The 'duo' or team-up is such a central feature of the universe that there's a literal shorthand for it in the comics, in animation, in the film and TV versions. And Gotham is a city of alleyways and rooftops, so the footprint for gameplay needs to be compatible with that."

Developed by WB Games Montréal, Gotham Knights is scheduled to release in 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
