Jeremiah has gone full Joker. A new, CBR-exclusive teaser for Gotham Season 5 shows the longtime antagonist stepping into the Clown Prince of Crime's big shoes at last. In a quick shot at the very beginning of the trailer, Jeremiah wears a purple button-down shirt, a flamboyant black jacket and the Joker's signature green hair.

The promo then smash-cuts to a deserted street as Alfred makes his way across it with a big duffel bag. A noise gives him pause, then he pulls a gun and surveys the area behind him. As he turns, Jeremiah rises ominously behind him.

The promo then cuts to Jeremiah standing alone in what appears to be Wayne Manor's study. Wearing his purple shirt and a black vest, he stares into the middle-distance with a big smile on his face. "Today's the big day," he says before the scene fades into the series logo.

The end of last season saw the apparent demise of some regular characters, even as the city was cut off from the outside world thanks to Jeremiah and Ra's al Ghul. These events evoke DC's 1999 storyline "No Man's Land," where Gotham was abandoned by the U.S. government in the aftermath of a severe earthquake.

Regarding where the final season is headed, showrunner John Stephens recently explained, “We pick up at the top of Season 5, at the conclusion of No Man’s Land, Day 365,” Stephens said. “Then, we cycle backwards to day 87, three months into No Man’s Land, where Jim has created his green zone and wants his reunification. We’re catching up, and for the first nine episodes, we’re always catching up to that first scene we see.”

Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth. It is scheduled to return on Fox for its fifth and final season on Jan. 3, 2019.
