James Gunn shot down reports that Marvel Studios is developing a Guardians of the Galaxy prequel series.Responding to rumors that alleged that Disney+ was working on a project that would focus on the "family-like relationship" between Gamora, Nebula and Thanos, Gunn confirmed the report to be nonsense. "lol no - he tortured them, not exactly a “family-like” relationship," tweeted Gunn. At the time of writing, the only confirmed Marvel Cinematic Universe productions to feature the Guardians of the Galaxy are the upcoming third film and I Am Groot, an animated series. Members of the team are also expected to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.Related: Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Is "the Best One Yet" Says Zoe Saldana

While the prequel series isn't happening, Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora in the MCU, has noted that she'd love to explore the origins of The Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe. Her connection to her father-figure Thanos was briefly touched on in Avengers: Infinity War but the actress wants to expand on that particular story. "I feel like that taste made me incredibly curious to know what that planet was like, what her species was like because they were completely wiped out of existence," Saldana explained. "She carries such a big weight on herself, and to get know why and where that comes from was really great."

Saldana will next appear as Gamora in the upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The actress has confirmed that the next chapter in the intergalactic superhero saga will likely be her last outing as the character. "It's bittersweet; after all those years of complaining about that green makeup, I find myself already nostalgic about it," Saldana said. "There's a lot of melancholy here, but also pride that we've achieved something great. James Gunn has written a beautiful story, that's making us emotional even as we shoot it."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will conclude the MCU's beloved sub-franchise, as confirmed by Gunn himself. The director noted that the film is "the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians." He continued on to say that while there's a substantial amount of pressure to deliver a satisfying conclusion, he's doing his best to give fans the ending they deserve.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to blast into cinemas on May 5, 2023. The animated spin-off series I Am Groot is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
