James Gunn, director of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, promises that the straight-to-streaming chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will introduce multiple new characters.Gunn was discussing the Disney+ holiday special on Twitter when a fan asked if a new character might be introduced. The director replied, "More than one great new MCU characters will be introduced," implying that the new additions will not only be important to the TV special but will return in future MCU projects.
No hints have yet been dropped about the identities of the new characters coming to the MCU via The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, although Gunn has teased one of them being, in his opinion, "one of the greatest MCU characters of all time." He has also ruled out Homer, the Happy Ghost.
Gunn, who also wrote the scripts for the holiday special and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, previously described having an unusual reaction to the positive feedback he had received so far. "The holiday special is... I'm almost jealous of it, even though I wrote it," Gunn said, explaining that "people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I'm almost like, 'Well, wait. I've got this movie here [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3] I've been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time."
However, the director himself has plenty of enthusiasm for his TV special. In his latest update about it on social media, he also owned some earlier remarks about the holiday special being the "greatest thing" he had ever done, although he added a qualifier: "But I’m prone to hyperbole & usually think the current thing I’m working on is the best thing I’ve ever done. That said I really do love it & think people are going to be very happy this Christmas with what we’re creating."
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will premiere in December this year, exclusively on Disney+. The new adventure is reported to run about 40 minutes long, and shows the beloved team of space misfits during the holiday season. Filming for the special is taking place concurrently with the filming of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the former is said to be required viewing before that final installment in Gunn's MCU trilogy.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives this holiday season on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 23, 2023.
