Award-winning director Karena Evans will helm the pilot and second episode of HBO Max's upcoming revival of Gossip Girl.

"Josh Safran has found a perfect partner in Karena to illustrate how the landscape of social media, the upper east side and the world have changed since Gossip Girl premiered 13 years ago," HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. "Additionally, her passion for inclusive storytelling matches Josh's and we are proud to have her on this journey with us."

"I couldn't be more excited for Karena to launch the new series," Gossip Girl writer and executive producer Joshua Safran added. "Her vision, voice, and passion are incomparable. It's an honor and a privilege to get to work with her, and I can't wait for everyone to see what she has planned."

Evans made a name for herself in the entertainment industry in 2018 directing music videos for Drake, along with starring in the critically-acclaimed Firecrackers. She was the first woman to ever win the prestigious Prism Prize Lipsett Award for her approach to music video art.

Along with Gossip Girl, HBO Max has also ordered a reboot of Pretty Little Liars to expand its content for subscribers. HBO Max's Gossip Girl follows a new generation of New York private school teens and takes place eight years after the original series.

The Gossip Girl sequel stars Emily Alyn Lind, Kristen Bell, Whitney Peak, Eli Brown, Johnathan Fernandez, Jason Gotay and Laura Benanti. The series does not yet have a premiere date.
