Gorillaz's Damon Albarn, who provides the vocals for fictional lead singer 2-D, provided an exciting update on the previously announced full-length Gorillaz film currently in development at Netflix.
In an interview with Apple Music, Albarn teased that the film's script is being written, stating, "I'm in LA because we're making a full-length [Gorillaz] film with Netflix. We're having a writing session in Malibu." He went on to say, "It's something we've been wanting to do for a very long time. It's been through so many incarnations, Gorillaz doing a movie."
This is not the Gorillaz's first attempt at a project made for screens. Back in 2017, Albarn and band co-creator Jamie Hewlett announced that a ten-episode Gorillaz television show was in development. The animation style would have resembled that of the band's many music videos. The fate of the television project is uncertain, though it is presumed that it has been brought to an end or developed further into the ongoing Netflix film project.
Gorillaz was created by Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett in 1998. Current virtual band members include 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russell. The band has earned a multitude of accolades, including one Grammy Award for "Feel Good Inc."
