Just when it seemed as if the rumor mill had settled on the villains, and plot details, for “The Dark Knight Rises,” Warner Bros. has officially announced the casting of “Inception” co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard — but in roles that no one suspected.
Academy Award winner Cotillard, long rumored as Talia al Ghul, will instead play Miranda Tate, described as a Wayne Enterprises board member who’s eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic work. Gordon-Levitt, who’s been tied to parts in the movie ranging from the Riddler and Robin to Alberto Falcone and Hugo Strange, will portray John Blake, a Gotham beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner James Gordon.
The two previously teamed with director Christopher Nolan on his 2010 blockbuster “Inception,” which also featured “Dark Knight Rises” cast members Tom Hardy and Michael Caine.
“When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience,” Nolan said in a statement. “I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.”
They now officially join a cast that so far includes Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Nestor Carbonell and Daniel Sunjata are also reported to be part of the ensemble.
This morning’s announcement obviously throws serious doubt on a report last month that “The Dark Knight Rises” would involve Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, assuming leadership of the League of Shadows. However, the latest story rumor, which emerged just last week, centers again on Dr. Hugo Strange, a decades-old Batman villain.
“The Dark Knight Rises,” the conclusion of Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy, begins filming this summer in Pittsburgh before moving on to London, Los Angeles and New York City. It opens on July 20, 2012.
Deadline has the official announcement which you can read below:
