Emmy-winning writer Gordon Bressack, who was known for his work on such beloved cartoons as Pinky and the Brain, Darkwing Duck and Animaniacs, passed away on Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 68.

James Cullen Bressack, Gordon's son, told The Hollywood Reporter his father's passing came following a long struggle with his health. James later posted a tribute to his father on Instagram.

Gordon Bressack was nominated for five Daytime Emmy awards and won three of them with his colleagues. Bressack won Emmys for Outstanding Achievement in Animation for Animaniacs (1996), Outstanding Special Class Animated Program for Pinky and the Brain (1999) and Outstanding Children's Animated Program for Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain (2000).

Pinky and the Brain was a popular Animaniacs spin-off focusing on two genetically enhanced laboratory mice plotting world domination. Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain was a retooling of Pinky and the Brain that saw Elmyra Duff from Tiny Toon Adventures joining the two mice. All of the aforementioned shows were hugely popular.

Bressack was also the first recipient of the Writers Guild's Animation Writers Caucus Animation Award in 1998. Other cartoons he worked on include The Smurfs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Captain Simian and The Space Monkeys, Mighty Max and, most recently, the feature-length animated film CarGo, on which he collaborated with his son James.

Bressack is survived by his his son, daughters, grandchild and siblings.
