“Goosebumps” may not have been a true box office smash, but it did enough to get a sequel, which was announced last April. Now, Sony Pictures is ready to give us a date for the film.
“Goosebumps 2” is now expected to release on January 26, 2018 according to Exhibitor Relations. Not only will the first film’s director, Rob Letterman, return to his spot behind the camera, but screenwriter Darren Lemke will also be back for the sequel.
Deborah Forte and Neal H. Moritz are also slated to come back in his producing role, and star Jack Black is expected to come back for more monster filled shenanigans. There is no word on whether or not the other actors from the first film - Dylan Minnette, Ryan Lee and Odeya Rush - will reprise their roles.
Prepare to be goosed again...you know who you are. Sony's GOOSEBUMPS 2 is a go and drops January 26, 2018.— Exorcist Relations (@ERCboxoffice) January 17, 2017
While the first “Goosebumps” wasn't an unstoppable monster at the box office - it ended its run grossing $156.7 million on a budget of $58 million - it did well enough to reach the #1 spot once it was released in stores. Obviously, Sony is hoping for a repeat performance of that with the sequel, and with a backlog of nearly 65 books to draw inspiration from, there shouldn’t be any shortage of ideas for the sequel.
“Goosebumps” centered on teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette), who moves to a small town and meets new neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush). Her father, author R.L. Stine, keeps all the ghosts and monsters from the series locked up in his books. When Zach unintentionally releases them, he, Hannah and Stine must team up to return the ghouls before it’s too late.
