Adam F. Goldberg, the creator of The Goldbergs television series, sparked hope that Goonies 2 is still a possibility by posting some new concept art online."Big news! I tried to wait out this damn pandemic to present Richard Donner THE GOONIES 2 in person… but I caved and set a zoom for for Fri. Never say die, people!" Goldberg wrote recently on Twitter, sharing original concept art for the long-awaited sequel.RELATED: Constantine 2: What We Already Know About a Planned Sequel to the Cult Classic

"The brilliant @MBarnardArt created all of my concept art," he added. "I don't want to give too much away but COOL!"

Michael Barnard created the concept art. The image depicts a young girl holding the keys to a treasure map and standing in front of the bone organ featured in the original 1985 film. It appears, however, that each of the locations on the map has turned into museum-meets-amusement-park attractions. A sign on a guardrail in front of the girl describes the “Bone Organ, 1632.” The bridge to the right of her directs visitors to “Willie’s Wild Water Slide.”

Goldberg has been attempting to get a sequel to The Goonies made for 15 years. He first pitched his idea to the film's director Donner back in 2005, according to Slashfilm. Goldberg was previously attached to a script for Goonies: The Musical. In 2003, he worked on an episode of The Goldbergs that served as an homage to The Goonies. In the years since, he's also prepared a script for Goonies 2, which he plans to pitch 90-year-old Donner again.

Although it seems a sequel might not happen soon, several Goonies cast members reunited over the summer for a virtual Reunited Apart charity event hosted by Josh Gad. Executive producer Steven Spielberg and singer Cyndi Lauper also joined the event, which raised funds for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. Fans of the movie will recall that Lauper wrote the film's theme song, "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough."

Goldberg first tweeted about his sequel plans back in April, when he posted a photo of his script and wrote, "I rival @joshgad as an ultimate fan of #TheGoonies. For the last 9 years, I’ve been secretly writing PART 2 for fun. It’s my masterpiece. I even had a big meeting scheduled with Richard Donner…canceled 'cause of the lockdown! THE GOONIES 2 WILL happen when life resumes. Promise!!!"

Released in 1985, The Goonies followed a group of adventurous friends who discover an old pirate map in the attic and embark on a journey to find lost treasure in hopes of saving their neighborhood from a property development company. The film starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Jeff Cohen.
