2009's District 9 from writer/director Neill Blomkamp explored the real-world apartheid that segregated South Africa for years in a new way, as a crashed alien spaceship became lower-class citizens in a society that hated and feared them. Sharlto Copley starred as a government administrator handling the mass relocation of the aliens who finds himself exposed to an alien chemical.

When he begins transforming into an alien, he loses his privileges and is forced to ally with the aliens to find a cure. While the movie ended poorly for Copley's character, there was a tease of hope with the sequel District 10, though that has only recently received movement according to the director.

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez teamed up to finally bring the long-in-development manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel to the big screen which starred Rosa Salazar as the titular android in a beautifully-designed post-apocalyptic world filled with robot bounty hunters and armored "motorball" athletes.

The movie was a visual spectacle that effectively introduced the class struggle between the elitist floating city of Zalem and the hard-working industrial Iron City. Director Niel Marshall worked off a script from creator Mike Mignola that further connected it to the comics, and David Harbour's performance as Hellboy effectively stood on its own. Poster for John Carter

Another movie that had a few detractors when it was released is 2012's John Carter, which was based on the fan-favorite series from Edward Rice Burroughs. Taylor Kitsch starred as the titular John Carter, a Union soldier who finds himself transported to Mars, or Barsoom as it is known to the locals he encountered there that were warring for dominance.

The world of Barsoom was built up beautifully and featured stunning visuals that set up further adaptations of Burroughs' classic literary series. Unfortunately, the movie wasn't marketed well and failed to attract audiences to theaters, resulting in one of Disney's most expensive flops that will likely never get another chance to shine on the big screen.

karl urban as dredd

Karl Urban starred as the titular Judge Dredd in the 2012 reboot Dredd, which adapted the hit comic character from stories that initially appeared in the 2000 AD comic publication. The movie impressed fans with its dedicated adaption of the comic character and his relationship with rookie and psychic Judge Anderson, played by Olivia Thirlby as they investigated a crime.

Dredd mostly took place within a single massive community skyscraper, which only teased the larger Mega-City One that existed in the post-apocalyptic future. The vast story potential of both Judge Dredd and Mega-City One was barely scratched in Dredd, which became a cult hit among fans despite plans for a sequel fizzling out over the years.
