Good Boys took the box office crown this weekend, supplanting Hobbs & Shaw at the top of the charts. This is big news for Universal, seeing as how both pictures are from the studio.
Good Boys is seen as a major success for Hollywood, as it is one of the top comedy releases of the year. Additionally, Deadline reports it as sixth movie from Universal this year open at number one, tying the studio with the ever-dominant Disney.
Disney has reigned supreme over the box office this year thanks to several monster hits. With Avengers: Endgame and The Lion King leading the way, the Mouse House has the top 6 movies of 2019 so far in terms of the box office. However, thanks to hits like Good Boys and Hobbs & Shaw, Universal is right behind it.
Outside of these two latest movies, the other Universal releases to hit number one in 2019 are Secret Life of Pets 2, How to Train Your Dragon 3, Us and Glass. Including Good Boys, Universal has spent 10 weeks on top of the box office charts this year. Hobbs & Shaw spent two weekends on top of the charts before Good Boys knocked them off.
Good Boys has also made Universal the first studio to top the charts twice in 2019 with an original movie, with Us being its other top hit. The R-rated comedy received an 83% on PostTrak and 80% on Rotten Tomatoes to ensure word-of-mouth traffic on its way to number one.
Good Boys, directed by Gene Stupnitsky, stars Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon, Keith L. Williams, Will Forte and Molly Gordon, is in theaters now.
