For almost 30 years now, GoldenEye 007 has held a very special place in the heart of gamers. Originally released on the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye 007 was a groundbreaking game for its time, and many of its features and controls became standard to the blueprint of first-person shooter games moving forward.

GoldenEye 007 has been ported to both Nintendo Switch and Xbox, though unfortunately without multiplayer for Xbox. This means fans who grew up with the classic game get to revisit it for the first time in decades, and whole new generation of gamers will be able to play GoldenEye for the first time. Whether it's been so long that you've forgotten the controls, or you want to finally play this beloved classic, here are some tips and tricks for GoldenEye 007.

Leaning Is a Valuable Tool

GoldenEye 007's single-player and multiplayer modes give players the ability to check around corners without fully walking out into the open. This is an invaluable tool that players should absolutely use. Players can do this by walking up a corner and leaning to the side to look around it. In the Nintendo 64 version, this was accomplished by pressing R, then left or right on the C buttons depending on which direct the player wanted to lean. These controls will undoubtedly be different for the Switch and Xbox versions, so learning how leaning works and taking advantage of it is vital.

Remember to Reload as Often as Possible

As with other shooters, particularly ones with multiplayer, one of the worst things that can happen to a player is going into a shootout with a half-loaded gun and being shot down during a forced reload. For this reason, players should always take the time to reload their guns whenever they find a moment between the action, even if they only used a couple of bullets in the previous fight. Those two or three bullets can make all the difference when things get heated.

Avoid Security Cameras

When playing the single-player mode, be on the lookout for security cameras. If Bond is spotted, the game will send several enemy soldiers to his position to take him out. While a skilled player will be able to make it through these ambushes with little issue, it's better to avoid them altogether by simply staying out of sight. Players can even destroy cameras with a few well-placed shots. Security cameras can be easily spotted without getting in their range by Leaning.

You Can Toggle the Auto-Aim

GoldenEye 007 has an auto-aim feature, which will either be the player's best friend or biggest source of frustration depending on their individual playstyle and desired difficulty level. Players who need a bit of extra help might enjoy having auto-aim, while those who want a more skill-based experience may want to turn it off. Either way, auto-aim can be enabled or disabled in the Options menu.

Memorize GoldenEye 007's Maps

Players who intend to spend a lot of time with Goldeneye 007's multiplayer should take time exploring each map to find all the hidden corners and blind spots where an opponent might strike from. Knowing where attacks could come from will provide a crucial advantage. Obviously, not every player will have the time to memorize the maps, and others might just prefer to play casually against close friends. However, those who want to be among the very best GoldenEye players will need to know the multiplayer maps like the backs of their hands.

Don't Pick Oddjob

Some gamers may have already heard the phrase "Don't pick Oddjob" in relation to GoldenEye 007, and while it's something of a running joke at this point, many die-hard fans still ardently stick to it. This is because Oddjob, a character from the Bond film Goldfinger, is much shorter than the rest of GoldenEye's playable characters. This means that he has a far smaller hitbox to aim at and can quickly get the jump on just about any other player before they've even had a chance to adjust their sights.

For this reason, a majority of Goldeneye 007 fans deem Oddjob unfair (even tantamount to cheating) and ban him from their games. It may even be the case, as newcomers pick the game up for the first time and join multiplayer lobbies against random opponents, that some players automatically disconnect if they see that an Oddjob is present. Therefore, players should stick to this unspoken rule and simply choose a different character to play as, such as Jaws or Boris, to avoid needless drama and ensure everyone has a good time.
