Golden Age Christmas – Santa Claus in…WONDERLAND?!?!

Welcome to the latest edition of Golden Age Christmas, where we will feature a different Golden Age Christmas comic book story every day from now until Christmas Eve!

Today we look at a 1943 Dell comic called Santa Claus Funnies #2, which featured a story where Santa Claus ends up through the rabbit hole into Wonderland…

I don’t know who wrote it and I don’t know who drew it (anyone have any ideas?) but it opens with Alice interrupting Santa Claus’ attempt to get some sleep in advance of Christmas Eve….

As you can tell, this is one trippy comic book.

As Alice takes Santa through Wonderland, he interacts with its denizens and tries to solve as many problems as he can using toys. Here, he tries to keep the Mock Turtle from crying…

After a strange tea party leaves him a bit out of sorts, Santa comes up with a trick of his own…

This leads them out of Wonderland and into Fairy Tale Land…

I liked the way that the writer kept this from being strictly a “it was all a dream!” as the dream itself actually did, in fact, serve a purpose by waking Santa in time for Christmas.

All in all, this was a well-drawn comic that had an almost surreal plot to it. Certainly an impressively challenging tale for a young child in 1943.
