Everyone knows about Godzilla’s main powers. Thanks to countless movies, toys, and even a few animated cartoons, even non-monster fans know Godzilla is a giant dinosaur-like creature with incredible strength and an invulnerable hide. The King of Monster’s atomic breath is also a signature part of his appeal, making fans wait in tense anticipation for the first moment Godzilla cuts loose and barbecues his enemies with his white-hot radioactive death ray.

That being said, Godzilla’s exhibited numerous other superpowers during his 60+ year career. The King of Monsters has fought many bizarre creatures, after all, requiring him to employ some creative battle tactics and reveal some weird hidden talents. Here are ten powers most people don’t know Godzilla has.

10 Flight

Godzilla’s fought many flying kaiju monsters like Rodan and Ghidorah – but how many people know the King of Monsters can take to the skies on his own power? Admittedly, it isn’t a very cool method of flying, which is probably why Godzilla hasn’t used it many times.

In Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), Godzilla decides to get more creative with his radioactive breath by curling his tail around his body and aiming his atomic blast at the ground. Incredibly, this propels Godzilla into the air and sends him flying – backwards. The flight is relatively slow-paced, but accompanied by some hilarious music and remains one of Godzilla’s more bizarre feats.

9 Size-Changing

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla is said to be over 400 feet tall – but this is actually an inaccuracy. In truth, the King of Monsters changes size regularly, becoming as big as whatever monster he’s fighting. Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that Godzilla’s height often seems to shift in comparison to the buildings he’s smashing through, although he rarely changes size while he’s on camera.

One notable exception is in the movie Godzilla’s Revenge (1969). In the film, Godzilla’s son Minya spends most of the story as a human-sized kaiju – but grows to gigantic size when he needs to fight. Granted, the movie takes place in the dream of a young boy and the kaiju changing size is Minya and not Godzilla – but considering Minya is a member of Godzilla’s species, there’s every reason to suspect Godzilla can also shrink down.

Godzilla is also constantly growing – in animated Godzilla film, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017), the immortal kaiju has grown to almost 1000 feet in height after over 20,000 years.

8 Sports Champion

More of a skill that an actual power, Godzilla’s volleyball skills are still very impressive when you consider he plays volleyball with a giant boulder! In Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster (1966), Godzilla pauses for a moment in his fight with the giant lobster Ebirah to throw a boulder at his enemy. Ebirah deflects the missile with a claw – and soon the monsters are smacking the rock back and forth like a volleyball match (at one point, Godzilla even whacks the boulder with his head!)

Godzilla’s affinity for sports doesn’t end with volleyball, either. In addition to boxing and martial arts, Godzilla is, according to basketball legend Charles Barkley, “a sucker for B-ball.” In the Dark Horse comic book Godzilla vs. Barkley, the King of Monsters plays some one-on-one against a giant Charles Barkley using a space shuttle scaffold as their basket!

7 Eloquent Speaker

Everyone loves hearing Godzilla’s iconic roar – but in one movie, Godzilla actually got to speak words! 1972’s Godzilla vs. Gigan had Godzilla order fellow kaiju monster Anguirus to investigate a signal sent by giant alien cockroaches. The original Japanese version had Godzilla “speak” through speech bubbles, but in the English dubbed version, Godzilla actually tells Anguirus, “Something funny going on – you better check.” Later, while swimming into battle, he orders Anguirus to “Come on! There’s a lot of trouble ahead!”

Godzilla and the other kaiju clearly do have a language of their own – Mothra’s fairy friends actually translated an argument between Rodan, Mothra, and Godzilla in Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster (1964). Godzilla’s son Minya also got to speak very intelligibly in Godzilla’s Revenge. While Godzilla doesn’t usually speak in words, there’s every possibility that the King of Monsters is actually a very eloquent speaker – he just doesn’t have much to say.

6 Magnetic Powers

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Godzilla gets struck by lightning and inexplicably gains the ability to manipulate metal. Using this new power, Godzilla simply attracts Mechagodzilla to him (along with several metal towers) and beats up his robotic counterpart. While this newfound ability may be one that brings thoughts of X-Men's Magneto, he isn't the only member of the X-Men that Godzilla is similar too.

5 Martial Artist

Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla’s employed many professional fight moves in his career – from boxing to wrestling holds to judo moves. Despite his bulk, the King of Monsters is incredibly agile and has been known to execute roundhouse blows with his tail and even delivered long-range flying kicks. Most of his moves appear to defy the laws of physics given his size, which just goes to show that Godzilla isn’t just a martial artist – he’s a superkaiju martial artist.

4 Radioactivity

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Everyone knows that Godzilla’s breath is radioactive (it’s in the name, after all), but many movies have established that Godzilla emits radiation all the time, regardless of whether he decides to employ his signature power move. This potentially makes Godzilla the greatest passive fighter in the world – simply by standing in a city, he can render the entire environment uninhabitable without knocking down a single building.

Fortunately, the movie Shin Godzilla (2016) mentions that Godzilla’s unique radioactivity has a very short half-life – meaning Japan can still repair the damage from a Godzilla attack after a certain amount of time has passed. More recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) established that Godzilla’s radiation is actually beneficial to the planet. Not only do the areas the King of Monsters irradiates come back more vibrant than ever (one headline even shows a rainforest blooming in the Sahara thanks to the kaiju), but his very presence seems to rebalance the Earth’s ecosystem!

3 Psychic Powers

Godzilla’s intelligence has been a subject of debate – with some movies claiming he has a literal pea-sized brain while other films establish that he’s actually smarter than most humans. A few movies, however, show that Godzilla possesses genuine psychic powers! In Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989), Godzilla evades the Japan Self Defense Forces with moves that hint he has his own version of Spider-Man’s spider-sense.

Other movies show Godzilla has a psychic link with certain humans as well as others of his species (such as his son Minya). Who knew the King of Monsters was also a mental giant?

2 Water Breathing

At the end of the original King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), Kong and Godzilla tackle each other and fall into the ocean – with only Kong rising out of the waves to swim for home. Many took this to believe King Kong had won the fight – but they wouldn’t be so certain if they knew about Godzilla’s water-breathing powers.

Many films show that Godzilla is in fact amphibious – capable of breathing water and even fighting under the sea. So, while Kong may have appeared the victor, there’s every chance Godzilla just waited for him to get far away from shore and then dragged him under the ocean for Round 2.

1 Super Poop

In the closing credits to Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), audiences see several headlines showing a world adjusting to living alongside Godzilla. One headline hints that Godzilla’s poop (and the waste products of other kaiju) turn out to be a potentially powerful energy source. Given that the kaiju must be producing a lot of waste, Godzilla may be solving humanity’s energy crisis just by defecating!
