As two iconic titans prepare to duke it out in Godzilla vs. Kong, director Adam Wingard confirmed the outcome was decided many years ago, when he was in second grade.

Speaking to Total Film magazine, Wingard revealed the origin of the film's decisive conclusion. "I felt like I would have walked away from the movie at any point if I was pushed in a corner where there wasn’t going to be a definitive winner to it," he said. "Part of the reason I wanted to direct this film in the first place is because I wanted to win an argument that I had with my friend back in second grade where we were arguing who would win in a fight: Godzilla or King Kong? I knew who I thought should win, 100 per cent. And I thought my friend was 100 per cent wrong. So flash-forward 30 years, and here I am. This is the pettiest directing gig that I’ve ever taken, because it’s to win a fight with a second-grader!"

The debate over which titan is the strongest has captured the imaginations of audiences for decades, as past examples failed to provide a definitive answer. While the two have fought before in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), the deliberately ambiguous ending left the question of who reigned supreme open-ended.

Of course, Godzilla and Kong won't be alone, as it's been heavily hinted that other significant kaiju will be challenging the main titans, including one potentially major threat from Godzilla lore.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.
