Principal photography on Adam Wingard's Godzilla vs. Kong has officially kicked off today, bringing together the two titular monsters for an epic cinematic showdown.
Included with the press release announcing the start of production are plot details offering the biggest clues yet on what to expect from the upcoming crossover film.
The release notes that as Godzilla and King Kong battle for kaiju supremacy, the origins of the monsters will be revealed as the top-secret organization Monarch searches for ways to eradicate monsters from the Earth for good.
Monarch was introduced in the post-credits scene for last year's Kong: Skull Island as an organization studying kaiju including Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. The agency appears poised to return in a big way in next year's Godzilla: King of the Monsters as revealed in promotional material for the upcoming sequel to 2014's Godzilla reboot.
Godzilla vs. Kong, directed by Adam Wingard, will release on May 22, 2020. The film stars Kyle Chandler, Ziyi Zhang, Millie Bobby Brown, Danai Gurira, Bryan Tyree Henry, Demian Bichir, Alexander Skarsgard, Jessica Henwick, and Julian Dennison.
