Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' Godzilla vs. Kong has released its first trailer, showcasing a true clash of the titans.

The trailer begins with a brief tease of some of the destruction the film will bring, followed by a shot of an unconscious Kong chained to a barge as he's being transported to civilization. From there, we learn there's a child who's able to communicate with him in a manner evocative of the classic Mothra twins. It isn't long before Godzilla arrives, but he appears to be at odds with humanity, as he's seen destroying a Navy ship before attacking Kong. It's later revealed that he's somehow being provoked. "Godzilla's out there, and he's hurting people, and we don't know why," Kyle Chandler's Dr. Mark Russell says.

During a flashback sequence, we learn that Godzilla and Kong's history goes much further back than the events of the film. "The myths are real. There was a war... and they're the last ones standing," we hear as Kong uses one serpent-like titan -- previously referred to as Nozuki but now called Warbat -- to take out another.

The trailer ends with Kong using a battle axe to redirect Godzilla's atomic breath back at him.

However, much like DuneGodzilla vs. Kong is a Warner Bros. and Legendary production, and the latter has been attempting to negotiate a full theatrical run.
