The first trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong has finally been released, and it teases the epic titular confrontation. Part of the reason why the two monsters will face each other in battle is because, for some reason, Godzilla has started to attack humanity, so Kong is brought in from Skull Island to put an end to the King of the Monsters' rampage. However, the trailer reveals much more than that, as it's said that the two monsters are the last remaining fighters in an ancient war of Titans. This revelation proves the two monsters have a shared history, whether personally or through their ancestors, and more importantly, it may tease the possibility of a team-up.

The Godzilla vs. Kong trailer makes it clear that the paths of the titular monsters have crossed before, and there is an intriguing shot where Kong roars at the sky as winged monsters fly toward him. However, underneath his feet, there is a massive outline of Godzilla, shining in the monster's signature atomic blue glow. The outline looks almost like a cave drawing, like those seen in the after-credits scene of 2017's Kong: Skull Island.

It's possible this is a flashback sequence to the prehistoric era, showcasing a fight between Kong and the warbats known as Nozuki. If this is the case and the movie is set to take viewers back to a time when Titans ruled the Earth and battled one another for dominion, then its purpose might be to plant the seeds for a potential team-up. Kong or his ancestor's willingness to stand over the glowing outline of Godzilla could be seen as a triumph, but it could also be a sign of respect. Perhaps the Kaiju has fallen to Nozuki, and the giant gorilla is stepping in to defend him.

If the scene is indeed a flashback, it could work as a setup for an eventual team-up between Kong and Godzilla after their initial confrontation in the present. After all, while the film is set to pit one against the other, it's believed that the two will join forces to take on a common threat, whether that is MechaGodzilla or something else. If the movie sets up the notion that these two enemies have a connection dating back to the dawn of time, then that could pave the way for a new alliance against a common enemy.

On the other hand, while it's possible the scene of Kong standing over Godzilla's outline is a flashback, there's also the possibility that it's set in the present. There is a theory that part of the film takes place inside the Hollow Earth. If that happens to be the case, then Kong's journey down there could reveal plenty of new monsters, such as Nozuki and other winged menaces.

Perhaps there, the shining outline of Godzilla could inform the giant gorilla that the kaiju has been here before, and that he battled other monsters, just like Kong has. If the premise behind the titular fight of these two Titans is that Kong believes Godzilla is another raging monster that needs to be put down, then the realization that they actually share a similar purpose could propel Kong to stop the fight long enough for them to find a common ground -- or a common enemy.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max March 31.
