The domestic box office got a massive infusion of life this weekend thanks to the impressive debut of Godzilla vs. Kong.

According to Deadline, Godzilla vs. Kong grossed $32.2 million over its three-day opening weekend, $48.5 million over its first five days of domestic play-- a considerable improvement over pre-release projections that placed the title's opening at $20-30 million over its first five days of release. That's nearly double the $16.7 million bow of Wonder Woman 1984, which previously held the biggest three-day debut for a movie premiering theatrically during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

"Monstrous results all across the United States. Audiences are excited to see movies in theaters on the big screen with big sound," said Warner Bros. Domestic Distribution Boss Jeff Goldstein about this opening weekend. "This movie represents a way for people to slowly re-introduce themselves into a social environment," added Josh Grode, CEO of Legendary Entertainment. "Heading back to movie theaters and learning we’re not going to get sick; it's these steps we're taking over the next two to three months to get back to the normalcy of life. This is a movie for a lot of people who are taking the first step."

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing theaters and on HBO Max.
