Godzilla vs. Kong kicked off its theatrical run in several key international markets this weekend ahead of its domestic bow. In the process, it scored a truly impressive opening weekend.

IMAX is reporting that $12.4 million of Godzilla vs. Kong's $121.8 million international opening weekend came from IMAX showings. That's the biggest IMAX opening weekend since December 2019, a positive sign for theatrical moviegoing as it begins to recover from the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

"We are particularly encouraged by the film’s strong debut in China, where audiences turned out in a big way for this Hollywood franchise."

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.
