Despite following up on three prior films in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong will function as a standalone work.
According to Warner Bros., Godzilla vs. Kong is a crossover event that won't require knowledge of the preceding Godzilla and Kong movies. However, those who have been following the MonsterVerse closely will not be left out in the cold, as the movie will serve as "a continuation of Kong's epic journey," which began in Kong: Skull Island.
The MonsterVerse kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla, which grossed $524.98 million worldwide. It was followed by Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. It is currently unclear if this cinematic universe will continue after the release of Godzilla vs. Kong.
The marketing campaign for Godzilla vs. Kong kicked off with a bang with its first trailer, which showcased a number of memorable action beats revolving around the two titular monsters fight. The trailer also revealed many story details for the blockbuster, including that Godzilla and Kong's rivalry dates back to ancient times.
Legends collide in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans -- instigated by unseen forces -- is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max March 26.
