WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Godzilla vs. Kong, now in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard knows where to take the sequel -- if it happens.

"I would absolutely love to continue," Wingard told Deadline. "The clear starting point we teed up, exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the [Titans] come from," he added. "We tee up some mystery in [Godzilla vs. Kong], things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level. If I have the opportunity, I know what I will do. It’s up to Warner Bros and Legendary, if they have an appetite."

Building on the previous films in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong takes audiences into the Hollow Earth, the home-world of the Titans. This is also where Kong finds a battle axe made from one of Godzilla's dorsal plates and discovers an ancient throne room, hinting at the greater history behind this mysterious realm. After he and Godzilla join forces to vanquish MechaGodzilla and save humanity, the film then ends with Kong taking his place as ruler of the Hollow Earth, all while Monarch observes from a distance.

Unlike the previous two MonsterVerse movies, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong doesn't include a post-credits scene setting the stage for the next film in the franchise. In a previous interview, Wingard revealed he did, in fact, shoot a post-credits scene, but wound up folding it into the actual movie. "We kind of just sacrificed our post-credits scene," Wingard said, before adding, "Which makes sense, because honestly, it's not even like that post-credits scene is teeing up anything specific. It wasn't like saying 'this is definitively where the MonsterVerse is going [next].'"

Although Warner Bros. has yet to announce whether it plans to continues the MonsterVerse or not, audiences are already pushing for a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel by making the hashtag #ContinueTheMonsterVerse trend online, following the movie's bigger-than-expected box office opening. Wingard has encouraged fans to "vote" for more films in the franchise, saying, "I think the MonsterVerse is at a crossroads where audiences need to vote if they want to see another one of these films before they continue."

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
