Legendary Entertainment's sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong now has an expected release date.

According to Variety, the giant-sized next film in the MonsterVerse movies is set to premiere on March 15, 2024, releasing nearly three years exactly since the first film. Few details on the project have been revealed yet, though producers plan to return to Queensland for filming. It follows up directly after the events of the well-received Godzilla vs. Kong, which saw the pair fight for dominace before joining forces to destroy Mechagodzilla.

Details are still under wraps, but the first film's director, Adam Wingard, will return to the director's chair. He previously expressed interest in returning to the universe, particularly exploring the mysterious Hollow Earth. "I would absolutely love to continue," Wingard said. "The clear starting point we teed up, exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the [Titans] come from," he added. "We tee up some mystery in [Godzilla vs. Kong], things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level. If I have the opportunity, I know what I will do. It’s up to Warner Bros and Legendary, if they have an appetite."

The project also recently attached Legion star Dan Stevens in a leading role, though details about his character remain scant. The film reunites Stevens with Wingard, as the two worked together previously on The Guest, an action horror thriller that garnered critical and fan acclaim for both actor and director. Godzilla vs Kong 2 marks a departure for Stevens, who's best known for smaller films and television.

Legendary’s Monsterverse has more than the sequel in the works. Godzilla vs. Kong writer Max Borenstein teased that there are plans for more Monsterverse films. The Monsterverse will also branch out to the small screen as Apple TV confirmed it picked up the untilted live-action series following on from the events of 2014's Godzilla and the aftermath of San Fransisco's destruction. Apple TV+ and Legendary Television recently announced members of the cast, including Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.

Other features in the works include a new anime to add to Netflix's growing collection, this one based on the 2017 King Kong film. Like the other Monsterverse projects, very few details have yet to emerge about the project. A short teaser reads, "A shipwrecked crew, an island of monsters, and one king to rule them all. Skull Island is a new anime series set in @Legendary’s Monsterverse from @powerhouseanim."
