The direct sequel to 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong will see Millie Bobby Brown reprise her role as Madison Russell. Zhang Ziyi is similarly returning for the latest MonsterVerse movie after co-starring in King of the Monsters as the Monarch mythologist Dr. Ilene Chen and appearing briefly as her twin sister, Dr. Ling. Like the rest of Warner Bros.' 2021 movies, Godzilla vs. Kong is slated to release theatrically and premiere on HBO Max on the same day. Legendary Pictures, which financed the majority of the film's budget, was not consulted about these release plans ahead of time and was reportedly considering filing a lawsuit against the studio. However, Legendary is now said to be in negations with Warner Bros. for a $250 million payout for the HBO Max deal, which is based on the figure rival streaming service Netflix previously offered to buy the movie.

In addition to Godzilla vs. Kong, Legendary was also responsible for funding 75% of the budget for Warner Bros.' upcoming movie adaptation of Dune. The studio is currently reported to be considering scrapping Dune's hybrid release in favor of a traditional theatrical rollout, based on the idea that distribution of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine will have led to herd immunity in the United States long before the film is scheduled to arrive at the beginning of October 2021.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max May 21, 2021.
