Godzilla vs. Kong writer Max Borenstein teased the addition of more MonsterVerse features in the future of Legendary Entertainment's cinematic universe.

"I've heard some exciting things that are happening that I can't divulge," Borenstein told Screen Rant. Borenstein believes Legendary has "a great handle on things" and admitted that he also had thoughts about future movies. On the back of Godzilla vs. Kong's success, Borenstein said there will be "new, interesting installments coming," without officially confirming any projects in development.

Borenstein also spoke about the timing of Godzilla vs. Kong's release, which debuted just after the brunt of the pandemic. "I think it was really wonderful timing for people to have that towards the end of that surge in the pandemic, people really felt eager to see something that was fun and joyful in the cinema and it was really exciting to have our movie be that movie," he said. The promise of more MonsterVerse films was tied to how people responded to the 2021 feature, pitting the radioactive lizard against the giant ape of Skull Island. Borenstein left the film convinced there is a demand for more monster epics in the near future.

Earlier in the year, Legendary Entertainment CEO Josh Grode also confirmed the company was exploring the future of the MonsterVerse after Godzilla vs. Kong's box office success, stating there were various ideas that would allow the cinematic universe to continue.

The MonsterVerse began with Gareth Edwards' 2014 reboot Godzilla, which was a promising live-action return for the Japanese kaiju in the West since Roland Emmerich's 1998 film. The shared universe expanded with 2017's Kong: Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, as they explored King Kong's domain. This led to 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, featuring various monsters from Japanese canon, including Mothra, Ghidorah and Rodan.

In addition to bringing Godzilla and Kong's rivalry into modern times -- first exhibited in 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla -- the 2021 film also welcomed back the antagonist Mechagodzilla. The extraterrestrial Godzilla variant first appeared in 1974's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and its Godzilla vs. Kong appearance demonstrated the extent of Legendary's monster roster.

The Japanese kaiju database contains a lot of titans to offer to future films, including Gigan, Megalon and Destoroyah, all of which battled Godzilla in the '70s and '90s. There have also been rumors of a Son of Kong feature in development from Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard, which would be a remake of the 1960 film of the same name featuring Little Kong.
