The first official trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong premiered today, pitting the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World against each other. However, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that another monster may be part of the film -- and quite possibly, its true threat.A screengrab from the beginning of the trailer showcases citizens running from a massive deluge of rubble and destruction. In the background, a massive metallic being roars -- which may be the MonsterVerse version of Mechagodzilla.RELATED: Godzilla vs. Kong Trailer Reveals the Titans' Shared History[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/bork_21/status/1353396041241010176?s=20[/EMBED_TWITTER]

Another screenshot shows a man standing in front of a bank of screens, with one of the screens reading "maximum charge" for systems. This hints that Mechagodzilla, much like previous versions of the character, will be constructed to defend mankind from the King of the Monsters. Fans have also suggested that Kong and Godzilla will unite to defeat the mechanical monstrosity.

In the Shōwa era of films, Mechagodzilla was created by a race of alien invaders in order to conquer the Earth -- with a layer of flesh that gave it a resemblance to the real Godzilla. In the Heisei era, Mechagodzilla was devised as a weapon by the United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center. Fans have speculated that the MonsterVerse version of Mechagodzilla will combine elements from both versions.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max March 26.
