Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard revealed the horror movie inspiration behind one of Kong's Hollow Earth scenes.

"The big reference that I haven't seen anyone pick up on is when Kong folds up and kills Nozuki (aka warbat) that was inspired by the holo deck murder scene in JASON X when Jason picks up the camper in their sleeping bag and smashes them around," Wingard said in a Reddit AMA.

The scene with Nozuki/Warbat occurs shortly after Kong enters Hollow Earth and is based on the aforementioned scene in Jim Isaac's 2001 science fiction slasher film, Jason X. The film was the 10th installment in the Friday the 13th franchise and not only sent Jason Vorhees to space but placed him almost 500 years in the future. Jason X also marked Kane Hodder's fourth and final film appearance as Jason Voorhees.

This was not the only sci-fi inspiration in Godzilla vs. Kong; according to concept artist Jared Krichevsky, Mechagodzilla's design was directly inspired by The Terminator's T-800. "Being [Legacy Effects], [there are] lots of T-800s about and so I studied what made them terrifying," Krichevsky said. "So that became my main source of inspiration. The skeletal structure, the eerie but uncanny similarity of man with the cold steel of machine."

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse, preceded by Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The film has proven to be a box office success despite premiering during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and is on track to earn $96.4 million in domestic box office sales, currently bringing in $358 million worldwide.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
