Director Adam Wingard has clarified some details regarding what makes up Mechagodzilla's consciousness in his MonsterVerse film Godzilla vs. Kong.

One of the questions Wingard answered in his Reddit "Ask Me Anything" AMA had to do with Mechagodzilla. "Who is the Mechagodzilla's consciousness (after he went mad)?" the fan question reads. "Is that King Ghidorah? Or a completely new consciousness with new memory? Is there any part of Ren Serizawa in it?" Wingard replied, "I think its the ghost of Ghidorah possessing Mecha's A.I. creating a new personality."

The Mechagodzilla that appears in Godzilla vs. Kong is the creation of Apex Cybernetics, in hopes that the robotic monster will help give humanity the upper hand against Godzilla and Kong. Mechagodzilla's presence was kept a secret in the film's early marketing, though it was eventually spoiled as the release date neared. Wingard previously explained why he spoiled Mechagodzilla's presence in Godzilla vs. Kong, stating, "The whole spoiler process of a movie like this, at the end of the day, it either works or it doesn't work whether you know that [Mechagodzilla's] coming or not. Obviously, you want the purest experience possible."

"I'll never forget, for instance, when Star Wars: Episode One came out, I was so excited about that movie. That was the most hyped, anticipated movie of my entire life,"he continued. "And I'll never forget, right before the movie was released, a couple weeks beforehand, they released the score on CD, and of course I bought it right away—what is one of the track titles? 'Qui-Gon's Funeral.' It's like, 'Really? You're going to put that on the CD!?'"

Legends collide in Godzilla vs. Kong as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans -- instigated by unseen forces -- is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
