Prior to hitting domestic theaters, Godzilla vs. Kong debuted in China to a massive opening day.
Godzilla vs. Kong has already amassed $18.2 million in China and is on its way to a $20+ million opening day in the territory. That would put it on track to surpass the $20.9 million Chinese opening day of the last entry in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Godzilla vs. Kong is unlikely to be a one-day wonder at the Chinese box office thanks to strong word-of-mouth among moviegoers on services like Taopiaopiao and Maoyan. The latter service is predicting that Godzilla vs. Kong will eventually reach a massive $166 million sum in China, well above the $135.4 million haul of King of the Monsters in the same territory.
Thanks to such an enormous opening day in China, it's already becoming apparent that Godzilla vs. Kong will secure the biggest international box office debut for an American feature since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began. Previously, that record belonged to the $53 million overseas debut of another Warner Bros. tentpole, Tenet.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.
